TOI Interview of Sudipto Nag

'Shooting' star
When Sudipto Nag first picked up the camera two years ago to take a peek into today's education system, through a seven-and-ahalf minute documentary, little did he know that his experiment would take him straight to the international film festival in Jaipur. But once his 'Factory of the caged animal' opened to an overseas audience, Nag decided to take his 'pastime' (read: shooting) more seriously. What followed was yet another short masterpiece about a security guard who shared his name with the legendary Bengali actor Uttam Kumar. The lucid tale of Uttamda took the 23-year-old to Mumbai's TISS to participate in the institute's film fest 'Cut-In'. The success pushed Nag to explore his interest further and resulted in him filming his latest work 'Shadow' on the campus of his university in the city, Eflu. "Previously I used to write my scripts here and go back to Kolkata to shoot them. This time I have shot in college," says the mass communication student with a clear sense of passion in his voice. This piece traces the journey of a simple village guy who travels to the big city for a degree and soon sheds his rural traits to become the quintessential urban lad. Clichéd? Perhaps. But he's sure to win hearts
